Don’t leave it too long. Time is a great editor. A month in the drawer will give you one clear pass with new eyes, but at the price of immediacy and the passion of following the original line of your writing. It’s a good idea to work your piece while it’s white hot. Then, when you edit it later, you will have enough to work with that you don’t end up with a zombie haiku.
