You know how history is gleaned from documents? From obituaries, perhaps? As a creative writer, you have something else that you can bring to the mix. It’s called story. History is nothing without it. If you’re feeling down, just remember that. Here, let me give you an example. I learned to read history in East Germany in 2008. Here’s one example, the Belvedere Palace grounds in Weimar. There is a nationalist German oak tree, an English garden planted with Russian graves (the seeds of German nationalism), that are all falling down (the East Germans moved on in 1989).
